Serves: 4

Ingredients:

1/4 Cup Tur dal,
1/4 Cup Moong dal,
1 Teaspoon Mustard seeds,
Asafoetida - a pinch,
3-4 Curry leaves,
1/4 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder,
1/4 Cup Tamarind,
2 Chopped Onion,
2 Chopped Tomato,
Salt to taste,
4 Teaspoon Oil,
2 Teaspoon Coriander seeds,
1 Teaspoon Chana dal,
1/2 Teaspoon  Fenugreek seeds,
1/4 Teaspoon black pepper,
1/2 Teaspoon Cumin seeds,
2  Red Chillies
2 Tablespoon grated Coconut.


Instructions:

First add both dal with turmeric powder in Pressure cooker and cook until 3 whistles or until soft.Now mash it well and keep it aside.

To make juice soak tamarind in 1/2 cup of hot water for 15-20 minutes. Extract its juice and keep it aside.

Now Heat 1/2 teaspoon of oil and add coriander seeds,chana dal, black pepper, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and red chillies saute for 1 minute.When dal turns golden brown, add the grated coconut and switch off the heat.Keep aside.

Now Heat another 1 teaspoon of oil and saute one chopped onion until transparent. Then add 1 chopped tomato and saute until tomatoes turn mushy. Leave it to cool.

Now grind the coconut mixture and the onion tomato mixture together to a smooth paste.Keep aside.

Heat 2 teaspoon oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add hing and curry leaves.1 red chilli,Then add one onion and saute for 5 minutes or until it turns transparent.now add one chopped tomato and saute until tomatoes become soft.

Now add masala paste,saute until it thickens and oil separated.Then add tamarind extract, salt needed and cook until the raw flavor of the tamarind goes.Then add the cooked dal,add water as per need, mix well and boil it. The consistency of the sambar should be a little watery, so add water accordingly.cook for a few minutes, stirring it in between.

Garnish with coriander leaves.Serve hot with idli,dosa or rice.
